Position Summary: This position is responsible for directing and managing the Tool Design engineering department from project conception, design and analysis to release and build. This includes overseeing the design of custom tooling that is used in welding, machining and assembly operations. The Manager will develop processes and strategies to assist engineers with concept and technical decisions while also acting as a mentor to develop and enhance skill sets.

Responsibilities:

Supervise tool design engineering groups as required regarding active project deliverables, schedules and costs;

Review and address active project performance reports and provide direction to engineering staff;

Collaborate and develop outsourcing partners for design work;

Authorize final designs and other associated approvals;

Supervise, maintain and develop engineering standards and product catalog;

Promote continuous improvement and training with a focus on quality, accuracy and efficiency;

Supervise the scheduling of engineering manpower needs;

Complete bi-annual employee performance evaluations for direct reports;

Champion continued performance and improvement of Tool Design Engineering department;

Works with both project teams and our customers from conception to release and build;

Interview, recommend for hire, discipline and, if needed, recommend for termination direct reports and Tool Design Engineering department;

Recommend promotions and raises and/or other departmental changes for direct reports and Tool Design Engineering department;

Participates in project kick-off meetings, internal design reviews, and customer design reviews as deemed necessary;

Provide final approval of all tool designs before fabrication or purchasing using established company processes;

Approve vacation requests for engineering team members;

Provide product technical information and specifications for manuals and marketing materials;

Provide support to the Service Department including unscheduled design support and/or service trips as designated by upper management;

Work closely with fabrication, assembly and integration supervisors to make continuous design improvements for ease of manufacturing, design simplicity or cost reductions;

Work closely with Application Engineering department to ensure projects are being executed within scope and function / design intent information is being shared during the design phase of a project;

Ensure complete and accurate documentation upon completion of projects;

Assist with the enforcement of company policies and procedures; and

Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

 

Experience / Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience;

5-7 years mechanical design experience preferred;

Managerial and / or supervision experience;

Project management experience;

3-D CAD design experience (PTC ProEngineer / Creo, SolidWorks & Windchill PDM);

Design experience in special machines, tooling, weld cells, robotic equipment and other machine solutions;

Experience in hydraulic and pneumatic control;

Computer proficiency including MS Office, CAD software, PDM software and project management software;

FMEA, equipment capability, safety (OSHA, SDS); and

Educational, training and experience requirements may be modified at the management team’s discretion.
