PURPOSE:  Develops and evaluates welding consumables and associated processes. Conducts applied research into new areas of welding consumable design and/or on new welding processes. 

 

JOB DESCRIPTION (DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES):

  • Assignments require originality and ingenuity within the specific field of specialization. 
  • Often works as part of a cross-functional team on projects of larger scope and greater complexity.
  • All Engineers engage in the development of welding consumables, welding processes, test methodologies and/or systems/processes in consideration of market needs, industry codes/standards and manufacturing capabilities.  Typical responsibilities vary by role within the department, as follows:
  • Product Development & Support:
    • Primary focus is on technology & product development or product & process improvement to ensure the consumable product lines deliver targeted performance and cost. 
    • Provides direct customer support in the use of consumable products.
    • Facilitates development of manufacturing process capabilities to support introduction of new products.
  • Compliance & Certification:
    • Develops and maintains systems, procedures and work practices that ensure product testing and reporting requirements are satisfied in consideration of continually evolving consumable product lines, fabrication codes & material specifications, and environmental, health & safety regulations.
    • StarLims application user support and system maintenance including integration with SAP.
    • Primary LIMS user contact.  Makes recommendations for continuous improvement of system functions.
    • Develops and delivers end user training and instruction.
    • Facilitates, as needed, Consumable R&D through the development of database tools and applications
    • Maintains records of all work in process and documents interim/final results in the applicable format; these include progress reports and issue logs.
  • Raw Materials & Chemicals:
    • Investigates new materials, new material technologies, test methods and sources of supply to ensure competitiveness of consumable products.
    • Ensures material specifications are in line with consumable product performance expectations and industry.
    • Provides essential technical support to supplier development initiatives.
  • May facilitate technology transfers among Lincoln subsidiary companies.
  • Establishes standards and methodologies for and conducts evaluations of product performance.
  • Develops/refines test methods, as applicable, to support new product development and product evaluations.
  • Facilitates development of manufacturing process capabilities to support introduction of new products.
  • Typically, works with minimal direct supervision, conferring with superiors as needed.  Has appreciable latitude for independent action or decision.
  • May provide task oriented direction to Technicians, Technologists and/or Engineers Level 1/2 in the execution of development projects.
  • Maintains records of all work in process and documents interim/final results in the applicable format.  These include Project Definitions, Milestone Plans, ES Reports, Technical Reports, Project Tracking Progress Reports and presentations at meetings/seminars.

 

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Baccalaureate degree, minimum, in engineering or related technical field.
  • Minimum 3-5 years engineering experience.
  • Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of engineering and scientific principles, practices and procedures, within the field of specialization, to the completion of difficult assignments.
  • Proficient in MS Office including Excel and Access; ability to write MSSQL queries and stored procedures;  experienced with a  .NET programming language (i.e., Jscript, VB, C#); working knowledge of  XML and Crystal Report is a plus  Computer literate with working knowledge of MSWord, MSExcel, MSAccess and MSPowerPoint, as a minimum.
  • Working knowledge of Design for Six Sigma and statistical Design of Experiments methodologies.
  • Possesses and applies both practical and fundamental understanding of various arc welding processes. 
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Works effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
