PURPOSE:  Work in the Microscopy Laboratory preparing specimens for analysis, performing basic microscopy tests, and various harness measurements utilizing advanced equipment. Develop and maintain laboratory procedures and maintain accurate records. Reports to Laboratories Manager.



  • Work in the Microscopy Laboratory analyzing and characterizing metals and weld deposits.
  • Work with Mechanical Test Laboratory to perform destructive testing of weld deposits and report results.
  • Work with Non-Destructive Laboratory to perform VT, RT, MT testing.
  • Responsible for the safe operation, cleanliness, and routine maintenance of all assigned laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure accuracy and integrity of testing procedures, records, and results
  • Maintain laboratory personnel training records, test methods, and specifications.
  • Support manufacturing and consumable development.
  • Responsible for development and maintenance of laboratory procedures.
  • Perform, instruct, and supervise the testing of weld deposits.
  • Compile, interpret, and report analysis data.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.


  • Minimum four-year degree required in Metallurgy, Materials, or similar discipline. Specialization in welding is desirable.
  • Minimum 3 – 5 years of experience.
  • Experience with Microscopy equipment including SEM, failure analysis experience a plus.
  • Knowledge of Mechanical Testing equipment (Tensile, Charpy, CTOD, etc) and specifications preferred.
  • Knowledge of Non-Destructive testing preferred (VT, MT, RT, UT).
  • Knowledge of statistical methods is required; Knowledge of Six Sigma methodologies is desirable.
  • Highly motivated, quick learner, creative, and quality conscious.
  • Good oral and written communications skills and a proven ability to work independently as well as a part of a team.
  • Excellent record keeping and organizational skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and database software; Experience with StarLims lab management software a plus.
