 Arc Products, a subsidiary of Lincoln Electric, designs and manufactures automated welding systems focused on fixed automation, orbital TIG and orbital MIG. Located in San Diego, California, Arc Products engineers and manufactures standard and custom automation systems for simple to complex applications. 

Reporting to the Customer Applications & Services Manager of Arc Products, the Applications Engineering Technician is responsible for developing welding procedures and documenting development efforts, performing customer demonstrations, training customers both internal and external on the in depth operation of automated welding systems. The position requires domestic and international travel including customer site visits, trade show demonstrations and support of company seminars and training centers. The Applications Engineering Technician is also responsible for performing benchmark tests of systems and components prior to release to the market to ensure fitness to industry requirements as well performing general welding related tasks, and the cleanliness/maintenance of the welding lab area.  


In addition this position must communicate effectively the welding performance of equipment to non-welding experienced departments such as:  Engineering, Machine Shop and Production. This is not a production welding position; tasks are directly related to supporting the customer base, sales field and engineering with application specific development and training to grow sales.


Essential Abilities, Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Applications Engineering Technician

Responsible for a full range of activities which ensure the operational effectiveness and excellence of the Applications Department; through development of welding procedures, demonstrations and training, including but not limited to:

  • Set-up of systems as received from production.
  • Maintain a standard set of equipment and consumables as determined the department.
  • Use basic hand tools to ensure equipment is in good working order.
  • Develop welding procedures within customer defined constraints.
  • Document all work in an organized manner that enables others to reproduce the same results.
  • Assist the Applications Manager with technical report writing to present results.
  • Effectively train customers on the use of automated welding systems.
  • Follow prescribed training methods and schedules unsupervised.
  • Travel to customer sites both domestic and international to perform demonstrations and customer training.
  • Represent the company in a professional manner at all times.
  • Assist in troubleshooting equipment by conveying firsthand information to the service department and engineering.
  • Use diagnostic PC tools to ensure optimal welding performance.
  • Follow all safety codes, demonstrate safe work practices at all times.
  • Maintain the Welding Lab areas clean, safe and organized; clearly labeling areas and items.
  • Provide the Applications Manager with list of items required for daily operations.
  • Interact with customers; assist with product marketing photography and videography.
  • Communicate, present and influence credibly and effectively at all levels within the organization, and externally with customers, potential customers, and industry professionals.
  • Speed, focus, responsibility, and professionalism; able to adjust to the rapid pace of the department and meet deadlines without sacrificing quality.


Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Abilities and Education)

  • Able to respond appropriately to constructive feedback from executive management.
  • Willing to travel 40-60%, domestic and international, must possess or be eligible to obtain a passport.
  • Must provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers.

  • Devoted to maintaining tools, equipment and work areas in excellent, well organized condition.
  • Ability to stand and move for 8 hours daily, and lift a minimum of 60 pounds.
  • Ability to stretch up and bend down on a regular basis.
  • Reliable and punctual work attendance.
  • Overall good work ethic and willingness to adapt to change.
  • Must be willing to operate in a typical welding and fabrication environment.
  • Associate’s degree in Welding Technology discipline is preferred; or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
  • Three (3) or more years previous experience in the welding craft; certifications in multiple processes is a plus.
  • Previous welding experience is required; knowledge of automated welding is preferred but not required.
