Position Summary: 


The Applications Engineering Technician is responsible for developing welding procedures and documenting development efforts, performing customer demonstrations, training customers both internal and external on the in depth operation of automated welding systems. The position requires domestic and international travel including customer site visits, trade show demonstrations and support of company seminars and training centers. The Applications Engineering Technician is also responsible for performing benchmark tests of systems and components prior to release to the market to ensure fitness to industry requirements as well performing general welding related tasks, and the cleanliness/maintenance of the welding lab area. 


In addition this position must communicate effectively the welding performance of equipment to non-welding experienced departments such as:  Engineering, Machine Shop and Production. This is not a production welding position; tasks are directly related to supporting the customer base, sales field and engineering with application specific development and training to grow sales.


Primary Responsibilities:


  • Develop welding procedures within customer defined constraints.
  • Document all work in an organized manner that enables others to reproduce the same results.
  • Assist the Applications Manager with technical report writing to present results.
  • Effectively train customers on the use of automated welding systems.
  • Travel to customer sites both domestic and international to perform demonstrations and customer training.
  • Assist in troubleshooting equipment by conveying firsthand information to the service department and engineering.
  • Use diagnostic PC tools to ensure optimal welding performance.
  • Follow all safety codes, demonstrate safe work practices at all times.
  • Interact with customers; assist with product marketing photography and videography.
  • Communicate, present and influence credibly and effectively at all levels within the organization, and externally with customers, potential customers, and industry professionals.


Qualifications Required:


  • Associate’s degree in Welding Technology discipline is preferred; or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
  • Previous welding experience is required; knowledge of automated welding is preferred but not required.
  • Three (3) or more years previous experience in the welding craft; certifications in multiple processes is a plus.
  • Willing to travel 40-60%, domestic and international, must possess or be eligible to obtain a passport.
  • Capable of managing multiple complex projects simultaneously, with minimal supervision.
  • Develop professional relationships and build rapport with others.
  • Adherence to safety policies and demonstrating safe work habits at all times is required.

  • Physical Demands: Work is usually a mix of standing and walking, pushing, pulling, manipulating tools and being in awkward physical positions.  Use of the telephone is extensive.  In the office there is minimal reaching, bending and lifting in relationship to documents and stored records. When at a customer facility, there will be lifting, reaching, bending, dragging, pulling and carrying of parts and equipment.  This individual may have to walk long distances to reach the equipment within the customer’s facility.  This individual must be able to occasionally lift 70 pounds and frequently lift 25 pounds. This position requires manual dexterity and visual acuity to utilize the assembly equipment and tools. The position requires vision, hearing, smell, and speech.
  • Work Environment: Traveling is extensive and may be unplanned and immediate; hours may be irregular.  Temperature may be hot or cold, inside and outside.
