Additive Research & Development Engineer

PURPOSE: Product development, manufacturing, process and system improvement, sales support, and other activities related to the Additive business.  Lead research and development efforts onsite at the Oak Ridge National Lab in Knoxville, TN

Primary duties to perform this job include:

  • Apply engineering and scientific principles in the design and execution of research and development projects.
  • Work on the design, specification, and documentation of equipment, processes and materials used in additive manufacturing.
  • Operate, maintain and initiate design improvements to additive systems to facilitate increased performance and operability.
  • Support printing efforts including 24/7 prints which may require shift work.
  • Work to improve quality and value of additive manufactured parts.
  • Work with production to resolve robotic print issues.
  • Support sales efforts providing assistance with customer inquiries and solutions.
  • Maintain records of all work in process and documents interim/final results in the applicable format.
  • May provide task oriented direction to Technicians, Technologists, and/or lower level Engineers in the execution of development projects.
  • Other duties as assigned by the department supervisor.




  • Minumum four-year B.S. in Engineering (Material Science, Welding, Metallurgy, Mechanical, Electrical, Welding, or Software) with 3-5 years engineering experience.
  • Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of engineering and scientific principles, practices and procedures, within the field of specialization, to the completion of difficult assignments.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally.
  • Works effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and assignments simultaneously.
  • Computer literate with working knowledge of MS Office (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Possesses basic programming experience including sound fundamental awareness of programming techniques and concepts.


  • MS or PhD in Engineering (Material Science, Welding, Metallurgy, Mechanical, Electrical, Welding, or Software).
  • Experience modeling and drafting in CAD (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Working experience with National Instruments hardware and software (LabVIEW)
  • Intermediate or advanced programming experience (LabVIEW, C, C++, C#, Python, etc.)
  • Robotics – especially industrial articulated robots
  • Welding – especially Laser and GMAW
  • 3D Printing
