PURPOSE: The purpose of the Welding Engineer is to support and troubleshoot the welding processes, develop welding processes for new products, and drive welding improvements in the Machine Division. The roll also involves programming robotic weld stations and specifying and procuring equipment required for the welding process. The successful candidate will provide collaborative communication across cross functional departments while applying knowledge and experience to innovate and improve welding processes used to manufacture products. The Welding Engineer shall promote and adopt the continuous improvement culture by focusing on problem solving to drive improvements in the organization’s safety, quality, operational performance, customer satisfaction, and overall financial health of the company.
JOB DESCRIPTION (DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES)
- Expected to be able to handle substantial portions of project work and day-to-day shop support with little to no supervision. They should be able to lead projects both within the department and cross-functionally. Assignments may be routine or non-routine and will typically involve a mix of analysis and hands-on activities. They may also direct the work of techs, college students or other engineers. Assignments may be assigned by supervisors or developed on their own but will need to be communicated to supervision to assure alignment with company objectives.
- Creates and troubleshoots welding and some brazing processes to manufacture product.
- Specifies equipment and consumables to be used to weld components.
- Conceptualizes fixture designs and creates designs using Solid Edge.
- Creates procedures and documentation for the manufacturing process.
- Communicates and works with pieceworkers, vendors, customers, and internal cross functional departments.
- Ability to define task timelines and communicate status accurately.
- Develop and execute continuous improvement activities to reduce cycle time, inventory, and waste while improving process performance, quality, cost, and standardizing the processes.
- Typical assignments may include but are not limited to:
- Resolving safety, environmental and ergonomics issues
- Troubleshooting and programming robots
- Process improvements and optimization
- Evaluation and implementation of employee suggestions
- Development and implementation of new processes
- Perform cost analyses and drive cost reductions
- Continuous Improvement initiatives
- Provide shop floor support and develop processes for new products
- Perform Capacity studies
- Other assignments as assigned by the supervisor
- Assumes additional responsibilities as needed or directed in support of the Company’s 2025 Strategy.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelors of Science in Engineering required, Welding Engineer preferred
- Minimum 5 years of Engineering experience in related field
- Proficient in implementing welding processes, equipment, and consumables used in production welding.
- Ability to program Fanuc robots for welding.
- Proficient at welding and able to perform hands-on work as required.
- Excellent organizational skills as well as written and oral communication skills.
- Possess and apply strong problem solving skills with an analytical approach and attention to detail.
- Ability to handle a variety of assignments and changing priorities.
- Good computer skills with proficiency in higher level functions of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Power Point.
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently independently, cross functionally, or part of a team.
- Possess and apply a broad knowledge of engineering and scientific principles, practices and procedures.
- Solid modeling (CAD) experience.
- Ability to be effective working with shop floor employees and to adjust work schedule at times if needed.
- Able to make good fact based decisions.
