PURPOSE: Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing) engineer supporting welding, metallurgy, and material science efforts for large scale robotic metal AM development and part production.
JOB DESCRIPTION (DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES)
- Contribute to both R&D projects and production efforts for large scale metal additive manufacturing (3D printing) with specific focus on welding metallurgy, welding process development, post weld heat treatment and material properties characterization.
- Support development of Weld Procedure Specifications and Procedure Qualification Records.
- Product development, manufacturing, welding process and system improvement, sales support, and other activities related to the Additive Solutions business.
- Supporting the creation of technical data sheets for marketing additive materials.
- Working with customers on projects for replacing traditional component materials.
- Primary duties to perform this job include:
- Perform research and development of welding processes and weld metallurgy as applied to large scale metal additive manufacturing with emphasis on materials properties characterization and weld quality.
- Communicate technical detail of various metal alloy systems including low carbon steels, high strength low allow steels, stainless steels, nickel alloys and others to internal and external customers.
- Assist in the development of new welding consumables, welding procedures, and material properties characterization to enable additive applications.
- Support the production of large scale metal additive parts via robotic welding systems.
- Execute welding procedure and personnel qualifications according to various code standards to facilitate quality and performance improvements within the organization.
- Conduct evaluations of additive feedstock product performance; develop/refine test methods and standards, as applicable, to support new and existing additive feedstocks.
- Apply engineering and scientific principles in the design and execution of development projects. Assignments are broad in scope, requiring originality and ingenuity within the specific field of specialization. Typically works as part of a cross-functional team on projects of larger scope and greater complexity.
- Maintain records of all work in process and documents interim/final results in the applicable format. These include Project Definitions, Milestone Plans, Technical Reports, Project Tracking Progress Reports and presentations at meetings/seminars.
- Typically, work with minimal direct supervision and appreciable latitude for independent action or decision while conferring with superiors as needed.
- May provide task oriented direction to Interns, Technicians, Technologists, and/or lower level Engineers in the execution of development projects.
- Operate, maintain and initiate improvements to additive systems and operational processes to facilitate increased performance and to provide general production support.
- Support sales efforts providing assistance with customer inquiries and solutions.
- Assumes additional responsibilities as needed or directed in support of the Company’s 2025 Strategy.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum four-year B.S. in Welding Engineering, Metallurgy, Material Science or other relevant engineering degree.
- Knowledgeable in the theory of welding metallurgy and experience with arc welding.
- Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of engineering and scientific principles, practices and procedures, within the field of specialization, to the completion of difficult assignments.
- Practical experience with engineering statistics.
- Able to lead projects or specific tasks within projects and takes accountability for meeting objectives.
- Able to effectively communicate both written and verbally.
- Works effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
- Able to work a flexible schedule, when needed, to promote the faster execution of engineering or production efforts.
- Able to manage multiple tasks and assignments simultaneously.
- Computer literate with working knowledge of MS Office (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
PREFERRED:
- MS or PhD in Engineering, Welding Engineering, Metallurgy or Material Science.
- Experience modeling and drafting in CAD (SolidWorks preferred).
- Basic programming experience (LabVIEW, C, C++, C#, Python, etc.).
- Practical welding experience – especially Laser and/or GMAW.
- Familiarity with welding codes and standards (AWS and/or ASME).
- Experience with Non-Destructive Testing techniques (VT, PT, RT and/or UT).
- Experience with Microscopy techniques and characterization of weld metal.
- Experience with or exposure to 3D Printing.
- Experience working in a manufacturing environment.
