Project Engineer

Position Summary: Provide communication and support for a large multi-year project throughout production stages to all necessary departments and individuals. The Project Engineer’s core focus is initial setup, debug and preparation for production of a large automated robotic system, which includes numerous operations such as Controls, PLC design, programming, motion control, robotic material handling, robotic programming, robotic vision, laser welding, plasma cutting, automated sawing and other hard automation.


The Project Engineer will work from the customer’s facility in North Central Indiana for the majority of their assignment. There will be some portion of their time spent traveling to Vizient’s facility in Bettendorf, IA for training and collaboration.



  • Take initiative to meet project timelines and hour budgets;
  • Write and debug effective and safe control and robot programs, which meet end-user requirements and company expectations;
  • Meet requirements for internal runoffs, safety inspections and other quality control procedures;
  • Maintain clear and effective communication with project management staff and supervisors regarding issues that may arise, and to ensure project runs smoothly;
  • Responsible for debugging of electrical systems as needed for operation of all machines;
  • Lead activities between the company and the customer in order to evaluate and resolve problems encountered in the commissioning, startup and day-to-day running of system;
  • Review production schedules, engineering specifications, orders, and related information to maintain current knowledge of manufacturing methods, procedures and activities in assigned area;
  • Confer with quality assurance, material, manufacturing and other departments to provide technical support;
  • Interpret engineering drawings and facilitate correction of errors on drawings and documents identified during manufacturing operation;
  • Investigate reports of defective, damaged or malfunctioning parts, assemblies, equipment or systems to determine nature and scope of problem;
  • Examine, measure, inspect or test defective part(s) for conformance to engineering design drawings or blueprint specifications using precision measuring and testing instruments, devices and equipment;
  • Evaluate findings to formulate corrective action plan and coordinate implementation of such;
  • Maintain records and / or oversee recording of information by others to ensure engineering drawings and documents are current and engineering-related production problems / resolutions are documented;
  • Resolve issues with vendors by collaborating with and following other departmental processes and procedures (i.e., Procurement, Quality, Fabrication);
  • Ensure and maintain safety and quality of electrical systems in order to assist in delivering the best product to customers;
  • Ensure control programming of equipment is complete, safe and functional;
  • Maintain quality of equipment shipping to customer;
  • Play an active role in reaching continuous improvement objectives;
  • Uphold company quality objectives; and
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.


Experience / Skills:

  • Associate’s or equivalent two-year degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science; or equivalent industry-related experience; or combination of relevant education and industry-related experience required;
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechatronics, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent preferred;
  • Previous, proven demonstrated excellent team playing abilities with organizational and time management skills;
  • 5+ years’ experience in PLC programming;
  • 5+ years’ experience in FANUC Robotic programming;
  • FANUC WeldPRO experience;
  • Machine programming (PLC / HMI) experience (i.e., Rockwell, GE, Ignition);
  • Safety system programming and troubleshooting experience;
  • Network programming and troubleshooting experience;
  • Experience in robotic welding (MIG, TIG, laser, spot) preferred;
  • High attention to detail and quality;
  • Ability to plan and execute daily and weekly scheduled tasks;
  • Ability to keep work area clean and organized;
  • Willingness and ability to follow directions from peers within the department;
  • Safely operate fork trucks and overhead cranes; and
  • Commitment to company values.

Nonessential Skills and Experience:

  • Safety (OSHA, SDS), ANSI (RIA) standards.

  • Be aware of OSHA & EPA laws and regulations as well as Vizient’s rules and policies that pertain to this job;
  • Work in a safe and environmentally friendly manner and observe all company EH&S procedures;
  • Immediately notify the supervisor if there is any safety hazard, any equipment not operating correctly or if there are any questions regarding EH&S procedures; and
  • Attend required EH&S training.

  • Work environment: The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate; temperature in the assembly area may fluctuate with the seasons as the production area is not air conditioned.
