Purpose
Oversee setup and daily operation of assigned Core Wire manufacturing processes. Take ownership of the area, ensuring results are met and issues are identified and resolved. Lead Operators will train and guide Operators to improve their skills, while monitoring, coaching, and addressing behaviors related to safety, quality, productivity, and environmental standards. Support efforts to minimize downtime and scrap, and help maintain a safe, high‑quality work environment. Reports to the Production Operations Manager/Shift Supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Keep the production lines running efficiently and minimize down time related to mechanical or electrical problems.
- Determine which machines are not in top condition and need to be shut down for maintenance.
- Work with the Operators to reduce percent fill variation and scrap that is related to set-up problems.
- Resolve problems that are related to the control of cast, pitch, surface lubricant, and control the use of drawing lubricants.
- Assist the Operators in determining when parts need changing because of excessive wear.
- Work on crossover, level wind, or any other winder problems that may be affecting the quality of the product.
- Assign the loading of redraw lines with supply wire.
- Control the separation of material that is held up for further tests, pending disposition, or requires special handling and direct the movement of held material to the designated hold area.
- Inform the Production Team Lead/Shift Supervisor of any part shortages that may eventually affect production.
- Work with the Scheduler and Shift Supervisor to redirect wire drawing operations to available lines in order maximize output.
- Assist on changeovers and validate changeovers are completed properly, including lot control and special orders.
- Assist engineering with new equipment projects and product development. May run some new product trials independently.
- Assist in mill roll changes (for rod lines) and check the run-out on mill roll shafts and rolls immediately following the installation of a new shaft or roll.
Responsibilities (Continued)
- Maintain the proper setup of the carton sealers (for rod lines).
- Move speed feed, reelers, carton sealers, and conveyors, as needed.
- Assist in Yoder Mill changeovers (for strip lines). Examine tooling for wear and rotate rolls if necessary.
- Change the color code tags in the wire room, according to the requirements on the Bare Wire Control Sheet, on changeovers.
- In coordination with the Shift Supervisor, approve indirect hourly pay for machine down time.
- Review, understand, and follow the departmental procedures, EW Specifications, SSW Specifications, Plant Rules and Regulations and the Job Hazard Analysis that are associated with the performance of this job.
- Obey all safety rules, maintain the cleanliness of the work area, identify and address safety behaviors of employees, and perform other duties as assigned by the Production Operations Manager/Shift Supervisor.
- Must understand the relevance and importance of the quality activities, how they contribute to the achievement of the quality objectives, and familiarity with the procedures/specification associated with the Cored Wire Department.
- Take on additional duties, responsibilities, and special projects as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma/GED with 4+ years’ experience in a relevant work environment OR 10 years relevant work experience.
- Basic understanding of manufacturing processes and equipment.
- Ability to follow instructions and standard operating procedures.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Proficient in operating and troubleshooting manufacturing equipment.
- Knowledge of quality control standards and procedures.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
